Fact Sheet for International Diploma in Travel and Tourism
Travel and
Tourism workers carry out a range of practical and administrative tasks
Travel and Tourism is able
to contribute in four main areas:
1.
The industry is
very important to the economy both local and national.
2.
People who work
in the industry provide a service to the tourist and business traveller
3.
The Travel and
tourism industry provides employment to both part time and full time staff
4.
For the person
with an ambition to travel many sectors provide an opportunity for worldwide
travel
The aims of this course are
to provide a comprehensive understanding of the skills required in the travel
and tourism industry. In addition,
before students start the course they will be given guidance in their learning
by getting help to select the optional units which most interest them and
support the sector work they wish to be involved in.
Who are
the people who are most likely to want to take this course?
People who wish
to start work in the travel and tourism industry at lower management level who
requires knowledge and skills as well as those in management level who never
had any formal qualifications and require a refresher course as well as a
recognised qualification.
Is there any qualification which will be required to
undertake the course?
No
prior experience is required but The Diploma is a Level 4 course so it is
advisable that the student will have reached GCSE standard or equivalent in
another country. However we have found out that the main requirement is
enthusiasm.
Study
Plan
The course is made up of 8 units, 4 mandatory and 4
optional. These are listed below. The first four are mandatory but these can
vary depending what sector of the industry the student is interested in
joining. Advice will be available on this at the start.
MANDATORY UNITS
UNIT 1 Travel
and Tourism – a further analysis
This unit follows on from the Certificate programme in
that we look in more detail at the Travel and Tourism industry in general.
UNIT 2 Global
Destinations
Anyone involved with the industry should have good
knowledge of the world’s tourist destinations. This unit provides that
knowledge and will vary slightly depending on country of origin of student.
UNIT 3 Marketing
in Travel and Tourism
The industry is very competitivewith the customer
having a wide choice both within the UK or to choose to travel abroad.
Marketing is therefore another key issue.
UNIT 4 Customer
Service in Travel and Tourism
The tourist industry is a person
based industry so customer service is very important.

UNITS
UNIT 5 Global
Transport
Transport is a major sector within the industry and
this units looks at the different forms of transport concentrating on a small
number of countries mainly the UK and India and their contrasting transport
systems as they affect travel and tourism.
UNIT 6 Tour
Operations
This is also an important sector for the industry with
the size of businesses varying from multi national conglomerates to the home
based industry run on a spare time basis.
UNIT 7 Travel
and Tourism Retailing
This unit covers mainly the travel agency business and
its links with other sectors such as tour operations and of course the
customers.
UNIT 8 Visitor
Attractions
This is an important part of the tourist industry and
this unit covers all the different types of attractions.
UNIT 9 Business
of Travel and Tourism
Travel and tourism is a business and the knowledge
required to run a business is the same as any other including human resource
management and business systems as well as the different forms of
communications and administration.
UNIT 10 Responsible Tourism
This type of tourism has become a major issue during recent
years sometimes called sustainable tourism.
UNIT 11 Airlines and Ticketing
Whether it be business travel or leisure travel this
is a major sector of the UK transport industry and requires specialist skills.
This unit introduces the development of the airline industry as well as the
administration of ticketing.
UNIT 12 Introduction to Hospitality
As well as being a major industry in its own right,
hospitality is a major part of the tourist industry with all major businesses
involved with hospitality in some form or other.
UNIT 13 Tourism Development
Tourism today is the largest industry in the world.
Progress over the last 100 plus years has been slow to start but since the days
of the earliest package holiday has grown dramatically. This unit looks at its
development in both the UK and India as well as some other countries.
UNIT 14 Cultural and Heritage Tourism
Many countries now market their history and culture to
attract more visitors. The UK has many such attractions but other countries
such as India also have a wealth of historical and cultural resources which
they can sell to the prospective traveller.
UNIT 15 Countryfiles (at present Mauritius and Niue)
These units are included by request but are available
to any student.

Assignments
You
will need to complete eight units during the course. Four of these are from the mandatory units
(1-4) and four others may be chosen from the optional units. At the end of the course you will be asked to take a 2.5
hour examination at your centre possibly online if facilities exist.
Study Details
This
course is a self study course that can be taken online or by printed material.
Each student is allocated a tutor who will guide and offer advice whenever
necessary. You will be able to see
yourself progress steadily as you work through the course material, which most
of our students can complete within approximately 290 hours of study.
QualificationsASET Level 4 International Diploma in Travel and
Tourism. ASET are part of the EDI group and are the fourth largest awarding
body in the UK regulated by the Curriculum and Qualifications Authority
How much will it cost?
We appreciate that many similar
courses are expensive. What we have done therefore is to provide the whole
course online and on CD. (You can have hard copies as an option). The total
cost including registration, tutoring and certification at the end is £280.00.
Alternatively you can pay installments of £60 on registration and 4 further
monthly payments of £60. Payments can be made online by bank transfer. See
