Diploma in Hotel Management - L4 (NCFE pending)

Course Summary
The Diploma in Hotel Management (L4) aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the operational aspects of the international hotel industry, and knowledge of the underlying principles involved. This course has been designed in that students will study at an ATHE centre for no less than 290 hours.

Work experience is recommended to complete this course successfully. This can be arranged in some regions such as London but a fee may be payable.

Syllabus:

Introduction: Scope and Nature of Hotel Management - The Hotel Industry, Scope of the Industry, Activities closely allied to Hotel Industry. (Mandatory)

Staff Management in Hotels - Staff Management, monitoring workloads and work procedures, authority, chain of command, career structures. (Mandatory)

Any 6 from Optional Units below

Food and Beverage Operations – An understanding of the food and beverage operations within the hospitality industry

Food Hygiene and Nutrition – Training in basic food hygiene as well as an industry health and safety issues.

Front Office Operations – The role of the front office and reception in a hotel.

Housekeeping The services involved in the facilities and accommodation department of a hotel.

Facilities and Accommodation Operations – The services involved in the facilities and accommodation department of a hotel.

Hospitality Finance – A basic knowledge of hospitality costing and control systems.

Introduction to Business operations – An overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in the modern hospitality industry.

Client Service and ReservationsThe knowledge and skills to use I.T. in some common applications in the industry. Knowledge of Reservations and Booking systems.

Marketing An understanding of marketing and its application in the hospitality industry, and how to optimise product penetration.

Assessment
Students will be assessed on a continual basis. A folder will be kept and records kept of all work and tests undertaken during the course. Tests will be done after each unit, some of which may be practical subject to centre programme. Centres will have flexibility here but it would be advisable to check with awarding body initially. Before the Certificate or Diploma is provided the coursework will need to be moderated by ATHE.  An examination will be held at end of course. Weighting for coursework and exam will be 70/30.

Progression
Progression to degree course (2nd Year for Diploma students) is being arranged at present.

Entry Requirments
Level 4 -
A certificate level qualification or
equivalent is the entry requirement for this course

Students need to be fluent in English unless course is undertaken in a country
where English is not the spoken or first language.

Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Association of Tourism and Hospitality Executives Ltd as well as NCFE (pending) and is in the process of being validated by several Universities in UK and discussions are also in place with some Hospitality organisations.

This course can only be completed at ATHE accredited centres.
